Odonote Privacy Policy
Effective date: 4 October 2026
This Privacy Policy explains how the Odonote app ("the App"), published by Pony That Limited ("we", "us", "our"), handles your information. In short: Odonote keeps your vehicles and maintenance records on your device. We do not have accounts or servers that collect your data, we do not use trackers, and we do not collect or sell your personal data. The only data that leaves your device is the vehicle information you choose to look up with the US government NHTSA service, and the files you choose to share.
What we collect
Vehicle and maintenance data (stored on your device). Your vehicles (name, make, model, year, trim, VIN, license plate, photo, and notes), service records, shop names, parts and costs, fuel and charging entries, station names, expenses, odometer readings, reminders, attached photos, scanned receipts and PDFs, and app settings are stored locally on your device using Apple's on-device storage. The App does not sync this data to iCloud or to any server. This information is not transmitted to us.
No account. Odonote does not require you to create an account or provide your name, email address, or any personal identifiers to use it.
No analytics or tracking. The App does not include advertising, third-party analytics, crash-reporting, or tracking SDKs, and does not track you across other apps or websites.
VIN lookup and safety recalls
Odonote uses two free public services from the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), part of the US Department of Transportation. When you tap the VIN lookup button, the App sends the VIN you typed to NHTSA to fill in the make, model, year, trim, and fuel type. When you open the Safety Recalls screen for a vehicle, the App sends the make, model, and model year of that vehicle to NHTSA to get the list of recalls. The App sends these requests directly from your device to NHTSA. As with any internet request, NHTSA can see your IP address. The App sends no other data, and we never receive these requests or the results. Both features are optional. If you do not use them, the App makes no network requests. The Safety Recalls screen also has a link that opens nhtsa.gov in your browser.
Camera, photos, and files
Odonote uses the camera only when you choose to scan a receipt or service document. You can also add photos from your photo library and PDFs from Files. The App receives only the items you select. It does not have access to the rest of your photo library or your files. Scans, photos, and PDFs are stored on your device with the record they belong to and are never sent to us. Odonote does not access your device's GPS location.
Notifications
Odonote can send local notifications, for example when a service, inspection, registration, or insurance renewal is due soon, due today, or overdue. These are scheduled and delivered by iOS on your device, without any server involved. Notifications are optional and can be turned off in the App or in iOS Settings.
Backups, sharing, and exporting
Odonote saves an automatic backup file on your device once a day, without photos or attachments, and keeps the 7 most recent backups. These files stay in the App's private storage on your device. Odonote also lets you export a full backup as a .json file, a service history as a PDF, and your data as a CSV file, and share them through the iOS share sheet (for example via Messages, Mail, AirDrop, or Files). This only happens when you choose to share, and the file goes wherever you send it. We never receive a copy. Backup files that you restore are read directly on your device. If you use iCloud Backup or back up your device to a computer, Apple can include the App's data in that device backup, under your Apple account and Apple's privacy policy.
Purchases
Odonote is free and contains no in-app purchases or subscriptions.
How your data is used
Because your vehicle and maintenance data stays on your device, we do not access, analyse, or use it. It exists only to power the App's features for you.
Data sharing
We do not sell, rent, or share your personal data with third parties. We never receive your vehicles or records. The only third party that receives data from the App is NHTSA, and only the VIN or the make, model, and model year that you choose to look up, as described above. Apple provides the App Store and the operating system services the App runs on.
Data retention and deletion
Your data remains on your device until you delete it. You can delete individual service records, fuel entries, expenses, reminders, attachments, or a vehicle with all of its records within the App. You can remove all of the App's data, including the automatic backups, by deleting the App from your device. Files that you exported or shared stay where you sent them until you delete them there.
Children's privacy
Odonote is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal data from children.
Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Material changes will be reflected by updating the effective date above.
